Teleradiology: A Smaller Footprint, Smarter Imaging Model

Jan 27, 2026

A recent Radiology Business article highlighted something that often gets overlooked in conversations about teleradiology services and modern medical imaging workflows: their measurable environmental impact.

In a new research letter from the University of Saskatchewan, researchers found that allowing radiologists to work remotely reduced commute-related greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 63%, with the greatest reductions tied to long-distance rural travel. The estimated energy savings were equivalent to nearly 300 MRI exams per year.

What makes the findings especially relevant is how practical the model was. This was a mixed urban and rural radiology practice using a blend of on-site coverage and subspecialty teleradiology to support both academic and community imaging needs. Care delivery remained consistent, while efficiency improved.

The authors were clear that teleradiology does not replace the need for on-site radiologists for procedures, teaching, or patient interaction. But when supported by the right PACS infrastructure and radiology workflow efficiency, it becomes a meaningful way to expand rural radiology coverage, reduce geographic inequity, and lower the environmental footprint of medical imaging.

At Radsource, this model is not new. We have been practicing teleradiology for more than two decades, long enough to understand what works in real clinical environments. ProtonPACS was developed by our radiologists to address the everyday frustrations they experienced with other PACS, with a focus on reliability, workflow, and usability rather than unnecessary complexity.

When teleradiology is built around how radiologists actually work, quality and consistency follow naturally. The sustainability benefit is icing on the cake!
