Radiology Burnout Is Rising. It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way.

Kimsey King | Physician Recruiter

As a physician recruiter, I speak with radiologists every day. So, when I read this article, none of it surprised me.

Imaging volumes keep going up, but the workload isn’t being shared evenly. And when that happens, it usually lands the same way. A handful of radiologists end up carrying more and more of the weight.

I hear about this every day from radiologists across the country.

Radiologists aren’t just reading more studies. The cases themselves are more complex than they used to be. Add in staffing shortages, and it starts to feel like the pace never lets up.

It’s no wonder radiologist burnout keeps coming up in conversations. Depending on the survey, around half of radiologists say they’re feeling it to some degree. That’s not a small number.

What I’ve noticed, though, is that most people don’t start out chasing high-volume reading for the sake of it. It just… creeps in. A little more work here, a little more pressure there, and suddenly you’re in a role where the expectation is to just keep pushing.

At some point, a lot of radiologists stop and ask themselves if it’s sustainable.

And that’s usually when I end up talking with them.

There’s always a tradeoff in radiology jobs. Higher volume can mean higher compensation. That part is real. But it often comes with longer days, more stress, and less flexibility than people expected.

Not everyone wants that long term.

At Radsource, we’ve taken a different approach on purpose. The focus is on quality and subspecialty radiology, not how many studies you can get through in a day.

That means our radiologists have more control over their schedules. They’re not constantly trying to catch up. They have the time to actually think through cases, which matters more than people sometimes realize.

And just as important, they have space for a life outside of work.

I talk to a lot of radiologists who are doing well on paper but feel completely worn down. They’re not looking to step away from radiology. They just want a version of it that feels manageable again.

For many of them, choosing quality over quantity isn’t a compromise. It’s what makes a radiology career sustainable.

There isn’t one right answer for everyone. But if you’re starting to question the pace you’re working at, you’re definitely not the only one. And there are other ways to do this.
