Phillip F. J. Tirman, M.D. is a highly accomplished musculoskeletal radiologist who is well-recognized by his peers as an expert in the use of MRI for evaluating orthopaedic, sports medicine and spine disorders. Prior to joining Radsource, Dr. Tirman served as Medical Director at Renaissance Medical Imaging Associates, a leading provider of diagnostic imaging services in southern California. Previously, he served as MRI Director at Radnet’s Norcal Division and as Musculoskeletal MRI Director for National Orthopedic Imaging Associates. He has earned numerous appointments and honors and is a prolific contributor to radiology literature with an impressive volume of peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and invited presentations, as well as co-authoring three musculoskeletal radiology textbooks. He has served as visiting professor at nine highly regarded universities and is the founder of OCAD (One Case a Day), a global online community promoting the exchange of high-level musculoskeletal imaging expertise. Dr. Tirman has also served as a manuscript reviewer for multiple radiology journals, including Radiology and the American Journal of Roentgenology.
Dr. Tirman earned both his undergraduate degree and his medical degree at the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha honor societies. He completed his residency at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. After residency, he completed a fellowship at the San Francisco Magnetic Resonance Center and a second fellowship at the Cottage Community Magnetic Resonance Center in Santa Barbara, California under the direction of Dr. John Crues.
Dr. Tirman enjoys music, cooking, and hiking and has written a James Beard-nominated cookbook titled The Wine and Food Lover’s Diet and recorded an original music album titled Black Squirrel.
